Nigerian Youths Advocate For Violence-Free Polls
Participants at the just concluded two-day National Youth Summit organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Abuja, have called on the commission and security operatives to ensure adequate security is provided ahead and during the 2015 general elections
Rotimi Olawale, co-founder of Youthhub Africa, charged the commission to do more in sensitizing the citizens to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) as this is the only way to vote their selected candidates.
According to him, while this is done, security operatives should also ensure lives of corps members that will be deployed for the election and other ad-hoc staff members should be safe and protected from any form of violence.
His words: “INEC officials should work with young people in the community to ensure security is actualized.”
In the same vein, Atom Lim, a social commentator frowned at attitude of the younger ones towards election. He mentioned that youths are not paying much attention to voting unlike their counterparts in the Western countries.
“If soccer and music can connect and unite youths from different parts of the world, then voting should also unite and not destroy us. Youths should always be glad to vote who they want as their next President and Governors during election.” Atom said.
Other youth advocates at the summit suggested that the commission should take it into their responsibility to inform eligible voters to pick up their PVCs, and should also from among themselves spread the message to rural areas.
