National Health Bill Lapses As President Jonathan Fails To Give Accent

Effort by experts in the Health Sector to mount pressure on President Jonathan to sign the National Health Bill into law met its deadlock today as the duration of the bill to be signed into law lapses and at the moment remains a document to go through the rigorous steps of reading in the National Assembly for another period of years.

The bill had scaled through the National Assembly and was passed to the Presidency on October 28 but failed to get a nod till its date of expire on November 28.

Experts at the 3rd Family Planning Conference which held at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, frowned at attitude of President Jonathan to the bill and stressed that the signing of the Bill to law would address health challenges and guarantee citizens right to health.

The bill will also provide funding for Primary Health Care (PHC), and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) whose interest are primarily on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

While Dr Ejike Oji, Chairman of the Family Planning Conference, had urged participants to fast and pray so the bill could get the President’s attention, participants couldn’t hide their displeasure and criticize why a bill of such magnitude and national importance could not be passed into law and had to.
