To make this year’s World Environment Day, the department of Environmental Biology of Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu campus, organized a day seminar tagged: “Sustainable Consumption and Production”. An HND2 Mass communication student, Oshomah Precious, anchored the event, which held on Thursday, June 4 at the Engineering Lecture theatre of the institution.

World Environment Day is set aside to create awareness, sensitize as well as to protect the humans and the environment.

Hassan Ganiyu, a student, said the department would also organize a rally on Friday, June 5, in order to educate students and the entire academic staff of the Polytechnic on the benefit of environmental sanitation.

Ganiyu urged the School management to take the responsibility of World Environmental Day celebration upon itself in order to keep the academic staff and the students in sound health.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Institute of Safety, Professional of Nigeria (ISPON) who blamed inadequate awareness of the celebration day on the part of the Polytechnic students donated 50,000-naira cheque to create more awareness for the celebration.

The department in 2013 held the first seminar of World Environmental Day, but due to the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) strike in 2014, the seminar was unable to hold.

The representative of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Mr Jagunna Ganiyu commended the efforts of the department for taking it upon itself to organise the seminar, adding that the celebration of World Environmental Day should not be limited to only the department.

Mr Jagunna advised the students of the department not to hesitate to run to the agency whenever they need any support from them.

The former President of Student Union Government, Ajibike Taofeeq, who is also former student of the department noted that the environments are in danger and the celebration of World Environmental Day will help Government and individuals take action to protect the environment.

“We are living in a dangerous environment, this is why most of us have to come together to ensure that we all live in a conducive atmosphere so as not to affect upcoming generation,” he said.

Among other dignitaries present at the event are Acting Rector, Mr Olayinka Sogunro who was represented by Mr Mutilelu Olumide Olusola, Head of Department, Science and Laboratoty Technology, Mrs Longe, two Representative of ISPON, Mrs Modebe Evelyn and Mr, Olalere Oladosu among others.
