An NGO In Nigeria Seeks To Help Teenage Mothers Return To School

Sephamid Bridge Foundation (SBF), a non-profit organization working to promote adolescents’ health in Nigeria, has unveiled a Back to School Initiative (BSi) Program for teenage mothers in Ekiti communities. The initiative aims to enhance human development by encouraging young mothers to embrace education in order to increase their chances of accessing job opportunities.

During the launch of the program at Ewu-Ekiti, a rural community located in Ilejemeje Local Government, the Coordinator, Mr. Dayo Ayeni said SBF is an all-inclusive NGO that focuses on adolescent health and gender development. He went further to explain that, SBF have in-school and out of school program. “The in-school program is where adolescents are educated and sensitized on the right health services and practices. Since lack of such health information places them at the risk of getting an unwanted pregnancy, abortion, STIs and HIV/AIDS and the likes,” He said.

Mrs. Adewemimo, the Assistant Director of Public Health, representing Ministry of Health, was very impressed with the initiative of back to school. Adewemimo said, “It is a laudable program that should be supported by all stakeholders, and the program should not be limited to Ilejemeje Local Government alone but should be extended to other local governments in the state.”

The teenage mothers showed interest in the program, which they hope will enable them re-establish their dreams of becoming role models to their children as well as becoming productive members of their society.
